Candida Esophagitis is a yeast infection of the Esophagus, which is the tube that carries all the food from your mouth to your stomach. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, it is particularly seen in people with immune systems that are compromised http://www.umm.edu/ency/article/000643.htm
The easiest way to know if you have Candida Esophagitis would be with an esophagogastroduodenoscopy that shows that you have Candida in your Esophagus, but you can also get a mouth or throat swab cultures. Either way, going to a doctor would be the best way to know 100% that you have it, but even they won’t be 100% sure if it’s not in advanced stages. What I look for instead are the symptoms that Candida Esophagitis presents.
The first symptom that you look for with Candida Esophagitis would be if someone has difficulty swallowing. It can be many things, but when someone has difficulty swallowing, and it is painful, but it’s not just from a regular sore throat. Then you can look to see if you have Oral thrush. Once you see that you actually have Oral Thrush, then you know it spread from somewhere, and most likely didn’t start in your mouth/throat.
When you go to a doctor, they will most likely give you anti-fungals which may or may not get rid of the Candida, but the problem is that when you have a weakened immune system it is very likely to reoccur. You need to keep taking medicines to prevent another infection. Instead, when someone has a weakened immune system, I believe you can still take the medications that the doctor gives you, but you should work on doing more to strengthen your immune system. Doing everything you can to fix your body is essential.
